As San Clemente has grown over the years, starting in the 1920’s, beginning again in the 1960’s and then again, with the arrival of the planned community, Talega, in the early 2000’s, the town has grown and burnished with love over the years as city planners and developers have tried to incorporate Hanson’s original vision for the “Spanish Village by the Sea”.
“I vision a place where people can live together more pleasantly than any other place in America. I am going to build a beautiful city on the ocean, where the whole city is a park. The architecture will be of one type, and homes will be built on sites where nearly everyone will have their view preserved forever. The whole picture is very clear to me. I can see hundreds of white walled homes bonneted with red tile with trees, palms, and flowers lining the drives. I can see sidewalks of red Spanish tile and streets curving picturesquely over the land. I want plazas, playgrounds, a school, a pool, a golf course, a fishing pier and a beach enlivened with people getting a healthy joy out of life.”
— Ole Hanson, 1925
The Pacific is central to that “healthy joy out of life” that Hanson was envisioning; San Clemente is home to a gorgeous 5-mile stretch of sandy beaches and epic surf breaks… it’s no small wonder why the international coastal advocacy group, Surfrider Foundation, calls San Clemente home – San Clemente is a place bound to and fiercely protective of its beautiful coastline.
Much like neighboring coastal town to the north – Dana Point & Laguna Beach – San Clemente has a wide range of housing choices for residents the run the gamut from small studios to breathtaking coastal estates that overlook the majestic Pacific. The historic downtown on Avenida Del Mar is ever-lively with its’ boutiques, eateries, surf shops and hip bars all tucked into historic Spanish-style architecture that town founder, Ole Hanson, embraced and championed. Around 200 of Hanson’s original 500 buildings and homes still exist in town today, most of which are on historic registries. Known as “Ole Hansons”, the homes are prized architectural treasures and fine examples of Coastal Californian Spanish Revival architecture.
For folks looking for endless neighborhood amenities, the planned Talega community is an excellent place to be with its sprawling parks, pools, tot lots, golf course, trail systems for hiking & biking and, of course, easy access to the beaches.
