Leafy walking & bike paths radiate out from Central Park, connecting the surrounding neighborhoods with shopping, local restaurants, boutiques and grocery stores that dot the community.
RSM life is so much about its foothill setting – the community is at the edge of suburban development and is surrounded by public & private nature preserves like Starr Ranch, the Cleveland National Forest and O’Neill Regional Park. World-class hiking and mountain biking abounds in and around the community – outdoor enthusiasts can hike or shred down trails from the top of Santiago Peak to Dana Point – a prized mountain-to-sea trail system that courses through the Canyons, RSM and ends at the glorious Pacific.
For golfers, two local golf courses – the Dove Canyon Country Club and public Tijeras Creek Golf Club are nearby, but for those who want more, Coto de Caza’s Country Cub offers 36 holes on two courses and is just minutes away.
The area’s notable history stretches back to an early Spanish expedition in 1769 led by Captain Gaspar de Portola. The expedition camped on a mesa on what is now known as “Trabuco Creek”, near Tijeras Creek Golf Course. One of the soldiers in the expedition lost his musket – known as a “trabuco” – a most treasured possession to any soldier. Though the musket was never found, the surrounding area has been associated with the word “trabuco” ever since and folks still keep an eye out for it!

Rancho Santa Margarita Living
- Rancho Santa Margarita (or "RSM" to locals) is located on the eastern flank of the county, next to Mission Viejo, Coto de Caza and Trabuco Canyon.
- RSM is loaded with amenities - community parks, pools, shopping + dining - but residents would probably say the RSM lake and City Hall park are their favorites!
- While the lake is a treasure, I think it is arguable that being nestled against the foothills that lead into the Cleveland National Forest might be one of RSM's greatest assets - being that close to so much raw nature is good for the soul and you will always see folks out biking, running hiking or just stolling along the myriad hillside trails & paths.
