The Laguna Niguel Corporation was established in 1959 making it one of the first master planned communities in California – well in advance of nearby Irvine & Mission Viejo (which are generally hailed as leaders in the master planning space). Land sales started soon after in 1961 in the Monarch Bay and Laguna Terrace subdivisions.
In 1986, Laguna Niguel residents, began taking steps towards cityhood; three years later, an overwhelming 89% of the voters favored incorporation and on December 1, 1989, Laguna Niguel became the 29th city in Orange County.
One of the key features of the city is the significant amount of designated open space - over one-third of Laguna Niguel’s 14+ square miles are designated as permanent open space. The amenity-rich city has almost 40 parks in the city, miles of hiking & biking trails, the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course, the incomparable Crown Valley Community Center with its Aquatic Center and so much more.
Housing runs the gamut from small condos to beautiful custom contemporary ocean view homes that dot the ocean-facing ridgelines.
